Does anybody remember the series, I think in six-parts, which aired on television in the summer of 1989/90, called The Champion?
It was based on a Maurice Gee book, and was set in World War Two. The plot was about a boy aged about 12 years old who lived in wartime Henderson, Auckland (actually filmed in Helensville if i recall correctly).
His life in the small rural town is turned upside down with the arrival of US troops who have come to be billeted with the locals. The boy's family take in a black soldier, and he and the boy become really good mates.
I have been trying to track down a copy of this for some time but have not been successful. I'd very much like to see it again. It was a great drama, and was apparently a very accurate portrayl of what life was like in rural wartime Auckland.
If anyone has more details of the series I'd love to hear them, or any memories. Cheers.
