Having seen what occurs overseas with the likes of the BBC and ITV archives releasing loads of old shows on video, DVD (and audio cassette and CD for radio programmes), I think that the same should be done here.
The taxpayers of New Zealand funded most of the old shows made in NZ from the 1960's up to the present day. Taxpayers also fund the hugely expensive archives in which those shows (that still exist and weren't wiped or dumped) reside, never to be seen again.
TVNZ does admittedly release some of it's modern series, especially documentaries like "A Flying Visit", "Captain's Log" or rugby and yachting, etc. But no really old stuff.
TV networks never run old serials, comedies or anything from our TV history either. At least with radio some archve material gets re-aired, especially on Jim Sullivan's excellent National Radio programme "Sounds Historical" every Sunday evening.
Most television from days gone by won't be re-broadcast in its entirity and may only see the light of day in snippet form - say for a documentary on an actor like Bruno Lawrence or Barry Crump, or in an anthology form like the NZ music show "Give It A Whirl".
Maybe they don't think there is an audience to broadcast these old shows to. But there is a lot of material that could definitely be released for public consumption on DVD. I think that TVNZ, South Pacific Television and the NZ Film Archive would be surprised at how popular some items would be if released for commercial sale.
If you had a choice of what might hit the DVD stores' shelves, what woulf you like to see again?
I'd like to see the following TV shows and films - some of which I've never seen so would buy out of curiosity rather than nostalgia:
- The Governor (a period drama bout Gov. Grey)
- Pioneer Women
- Mortimer's Patch
- Marlin Bay
- The Mad Dog Gang films
- Under The Mountain
- The Champion
- Radio Times
- The Billy T. James Show
- Maybe a compilation tape of various best bits from TVNZ kid's shows like Chic Chat, After School, Count Homogenised, etc
There are loads more and I'll add them as I think of them.
